A student is halfway through a difficult Maths question. The formula looks familiar, but the next step does not.
Opening an AI tool takes seconds.
“Solve this question.”
A complete solution appears.
The student reads it, understands most of it, copies the method into a notebook and moves on.
It feels productive. But there is an important question hiding underneath: could the student solve a similar question tomorrow without AI?
That is the challenge students face as artificial intelligence becomes part of everyday studying.
AI can explain difficult concepts, answer doubts, create practice questions and help students revise. Used carelessly, however, the same technology can remove some of the thinking that makes studying useful in the first place.
For CBSE students, the goal should not be to avoid AI completely. It should be to learn when AI helps learning and when it starts replacing it.
Attempt the question before asking AI
One simple habit can change the way students use AI:
Try first. Ask second.
Suppose you are solving a numerical from a Physics chapter and cannot reach the correct answer.
Instead of immediately asking AI to solve it, spend a few minutes attempting the question yourself. Write down the formula you think applies, substitute the values or at least identify where you are stuck.
Then ask for help.
There is a big difference between:
“Solve this Physics question.”
and:
“I think this formula applies, but I am stuck after substituting the values. Can you tell me where I am going wrong?”
The second prompt gives AI something more useful to work with: your reasoning.
More importantly, you have already exercised the skills that exams eventually test — recalling the concept, choosing an approach and attempting to apply it.
Even an unsuccessful attempt can be valuable because it reveals what you actually need help with.
Ask for a hint before asking for the answer
Being stuck does not always mean you need a complete solution.
Sometimes you need one small push.
For example, instead of asking:
“What is the answer?”
try:
“Give me one hint, but don’t reveal the final answer.”
If that is not enough:
“Give me another hint about which concept I should use.”
Only ask for a complete explanation when the hints are not helping.
This creates a simple learning sequence:
Attempt → hint → retry → explanation if needed → practise independently
The objective is not to make studying unnecessarily difficult. It is to make sure AI provides only as much assistance as you actually need.
Use AI to understand mistakes, not just correct them
Wrong answers are some of the most useful parts of practice — if you understand why they were wrong.
Imagine you answer a Science question incorrectly.
You could ask AI:
“What is the correct answer?”
But that only fixes the question in front of you.
A more useful prompt would be:
“Here is the question, my answer and the correct answer. What did I misunderstand?”
The mistake might come from several places.
Perhaps you did not understand the underlying concept. Maybe you knew the concept but applied it incorrectly. Perhaps you misread one word in the question. Or the reasoning was correct and a small calculation error changed the final answer.
Each problem requires a different response.
Finding that difference is particularly useful during revision. If five incorrect questions are actually caused by the same misunderstanding, you do not necessarily have five weak areas. You may have one concept that needs attention.
Keep AI connected to what you are actually studying
General AI tools can know a great deal, but CBSE preparation has a specific context.
Students are studying particular classes, subjects, chapters and learning objectives. An explanation can be technically correct while still being more advanced than required or using a method different from the one a student has learned.
This is why context matters when asking AI for academic help.
Tell the tool what you are studying.
Instead of:
“Explain electricity.”
try:
“I am a CBSE Class 10 student studying Electricity. Explain electric potential difference at my level with a simple example.”

Whatever tool you use, mentioning your class, subject and chapter can make the interaction more relevant.
Do not let AI replace NCERT and classroom learning
AI should be another layer of support, not the only source a student relies on.
For CBSE students, textbooks, classroom explanations, teacher guidance and curriculum-aligned CBSE learning resources still provide the foundation.
This matters for another reason: AI can make mistakes.
A response can sound polished and confident while containing an inaccurate statement. If something contradicts your textbook or what you learned in class, do not automatically assume the AI is correct.
Check.
Ask your teacher. Return to the relevant NCERT section. Compare the explanation with a trusted source.
Learning to question AI is becoming just as important as learning how to ask it good questions.
Turn explanations into practice
There is a common trap in studying: understanding an explanation can feel like mastering a concept.
They are not necessarily the same.
Suppose AI explains a difficult algebra problem beautifully. Every step makes sense while you read it.
Before moving on, close the explanation and try another question.
You can even ask:
“Give me a similar question to solve myself. Don’t provide the answer until I submit my attempt.”
This turns AI from an explanation tool into a practice tool.
If you solve the new problem independently, that is stronger evidence that the concept has started to stick.
If you get stuck in exactly the same place, you have discovered something useful: the original explanation did not fully solve the underlying difficulty.
Use AI differently during revision
AI can be particularly useful when revision becomes repetitive.
After completing a chapter, students can ask AI to:
- create five questions on a specific concept;
- quiz them one question at a time;
- make them explain a concept in their own words;
- compare two commonly confused ideas;
- identify gaps in an answer they have already written;
- generate a similar question after they make a mistake.
The important part is that the student should still be retrieving, explaining, solving and writing.
For example, asking AI to generate a summary and reading it once is relatively passive.
Trying to recall the chapter yourself first and then asking AI to identify what you missed requires much more participation.
AI becomes more useful when it creates opportunities to think rather than eliminating them.
Know when not to use AI
Perhaps the most important AI study skill is knowing when to close it.
If you are practising a timed sample paper, constantly checking AI defeats part of the purpose. You need to know how you perform without assistance.
The same applies when testing whether you have actually learned a chapter.
Try some questions with no AI, no textbook and no notes.
This gives you an honest picture of what you can recall and apply independently.
You can always bring AI back afterward to review the mistakes.
A useful pattern is:
Learn with support → practise with support → practise independently → review weaknesses

The goal is to need less help over time
AI can make studying faster, but speed should not be the only measure of whether it is helping.
A better question is:
Am I becoming more capable of doing this without AI?
If you needed three hints to solve a type of question last week and only one today, that is progress.
If you once needed a full explanation of a chapter but can now explain the concept yourself, that is progress.
And if AI helps you identify a weak concept and you can later solve questions from that concept independently, the tool has served its purpose.
For CBSE students, responsible AI use does not mean refusing help.
It means keeping the student, not the technology responsible for the learning.
Use AI to explain. Use it to question you. Use it to provide hints, generate practice and help you understand mistakes.
But keep attempting, remembering, reasoning and writing for yourself.
Because when the exam paper eventually arrives, the most useful thing an AI tool can have done is not give you more answers.
It helps you become better at finding them yourself.
